AI, Artificial Intelligence, is the latest technology helping us to authenticate paintings and drawings by Claude Monet.

It is essentially a technological version of what was long known as connoisseurship.

Instead of relying on the human eye, and human memory, and the processing power of the human brain, Artificial Intelligence turns images into thousands of numbers, strings of mathematical relations, thousands of percentages and performs algorithmic comparisons between them.

The result is the probability of a mathematical match.

It is not in and by itself sufficient for authentication or rejection, but it does provide another type of diagnostic that we didn’t have before.

It is a mathematical way of looking at a painting, just like X-rays provide a different view. It adds strength to authentication results.
